It started with my grandmother.
In 2016, Abuela Rosa lost her home to a tax sale after getting behind on payments during a medical emergency. The house she'd lived in for 40 years—gone. We were devastated.
Three years later, I stumbled across something while researching a completely unrelated matter: her property had sold for $147,000 at auction. She owed $23,000. That meant there was over $120,000 sitting in the county's account—money that was hers.
I tried to claim it. I called the county. I filled out forms. I got transferred, put on hold, and lost in bureaucracy. Finally, with help from an attorney, we got the money—two years after I first found out about it.
